AHSAA Golf: Champions include UMS-Wright, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Spain Park

The UMS-Wright Boys’ Golf Team won their 26th AHSAA State Golf Championship with the Class 5A crown and the Mountain Brook Boys won their 11th – and fifth in a row – with the 6A title. as the 73rd AHSAA Championships wrapped up Tuesday at Robert Trent Jones of Huntsville. Hampton Cove Golf Course.

The Haleyville Class 4A boys shot 297 consecutive rounds to win their first state title and three girls’ teams won championships for the first time – Mars Hill Bible in 1A/3A, Pike Road in 4A/5A and UMS-Wright in 6A.

Nine golfers on the boys’ side of the competition finished under par, led by Class 7A medalist Jack Mitchell James Clemens with his second consecutive 68 in the 36-hole tournament to finish at 8 under 136. Spain Park’s Chase Kyes was second at 5 under and Ward Harris of Vestavia Hills was third at 2 under. Kyes’ 67 on Tuesday was the lowest round of the day.

Tom Fischer of Mountain Brook and Buddy Fleming of St. Paul’s finished 1-under 6A, tied for low medal honors. John Bruce of Guntersville led the 5A class with a 3-under 141 and Hudson Lawson of Haleyville shot 2 under to finish atop the 4A standings.

Bayside Academy’s Cole Komyati led the 3A class with a 1 under finish and Michael Heaton of 1A/2A Bayshore Christian finished the competition at 1 under.

Five girls finished under par with three at 4 under 140 – Molly Davidson of Hewitt-Trussville in 7A, Frances Brown and Jinger Heath of Hartselle in 6A. Auburn’s Kate Ha was second in 7A with a 1-under 143. Brindlee Mountain’s Ellie Cothran led 1A/3A at 3-under. Lauren Sechrest of Alexandria took 4A/5A honors with a 5-over finish.

On Tuesday, 34 of 40 teams improved their score from Monday’s opening 18-hole competition. Lauderdale County’s Peyton Preston scored a hole-in-one on the 14th hole and finished seventh in Class 3A.

The other men’s champions were 7A Vestavia Hills with a 14 out of 590, Bayside Academy in 3A (67 out of 643) and Elba in 1A/2A (89 out of 665). Spain Park won the Women’s 7A title against Huntsville. The two teams finished at 20 of 452, with the championship decided by the first tiebreaker – the lowest scorer at the No. 4 position. Courtney Johnson finished 79-76-155 for the Jaguars, which also tied for ninth in the 7A class.

Hartselle’s Jinger Heath had the lowest round of the tournament on the girls’ side, shooting a 6-under 66 on Tuesday to finish a shot behind UMS-Wright Class 6A girls’ low medalist Frances Brown. Brown rode rounds of 71-69-140 to lead the Bulldogs’ race for state champions. Heath fired 75 shots Monday and finished with a total of 141 over 36 holes.
