Chelsea man’s epic reaction after forgetting his role for Spain

For months now, the Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta he was expected to join Barcelona.

The La Liga giants haven’t hidden their desire to bring the 32-year-old to Camp Nou. However, La Blaugrana’s perilous financial situation would mean that they can’t even register players they’ve already signednot to mention other arrivals.

Barca’s money troubles have left Azpilicueta in limbo. With no imminent sign of a move to Catalonia in sight, the Blues defender has instead flown away alongside his chelsea teammates for their pre-season tour of the United States.

By a report from the sunXavi Hernandez’s side were keen to secure a deal for the Spaniard before he leaves for North America.

They were unsuccessful, however, as Azpilicueta was seen training with the London club in a photo uploaded to Chelsea’s official Twitter account on Sunday morning from Los Angeles.

Barcelona currently find themselves in an administrative nightmare, but they have somehow found a way to complete a number of transfers over the past 12 months, despite being deep in the red.

They are hoping for a similar result when it comes to Azpilicueta before starting their 2022/23 La Liga campaign at home against Rayo Vallecano on August 13.

If the move is to happen, the player themselves will naturally want as much time as possible to bed down in their new surroundings before launching into competitive action.

After 476 games for Chelsea over the past 10 seasons, Azpilicueta has grown accustomed to having the freedom to move down the right flank at will.

In fact, the veteran had become so comfortable playing in a back five under Blues boss Thomas Tuchel, that he suffered an unfortunate cerebral blackout while representing Spain last year. — and his reaction to it was absolutely brilliant.

At Stamford Bridge, Azpilicueta was able to maraud forward, knowing he had ample cover at the back in case his side were caught in possession.

Sadly, that wasn’t the case when on duty with Luis Enrique’s Spain side against Italy last year, where the Chelsea man had to operate in a traditional four-back formation. .

No problem for a player of Azpilicueta’s experience, of course, except that he completely forgot he wasn’t playing in his club system.

Taking possession of the ball deep in his own half, Azpilicueta raced past an Italian striker before passing the ball to a teammate as he approached the halfway line.

He wasn’t done there, however. Keen to add more numbers to the Spanish attack – as he was used to with Chelsea – Azpilicueta charged into Italian territory.

Seconds later, the defender realizes he is miles out of position and his side are potentially vulnerable at the back. Putting his hands to his head in disbelief, Azpilicueta seemed truly emptied of his mistake and timidly steps back to resume his assigned role.

It was one of those moments as a player that you hope to fly under the radar. Unfortunately for Azpilicueta, that was never going to happen with footage of the Nations League clash being broadcast around the world.

It didn’t take long for the brilliant images to hit TikTok, where they were then shared on Twitter – and liked more than 35,000 times.

Judging by his body language after realizing his mistake, Azpilicueta probably promised himself on the spot that he would be a bit more observant as he moved up the pitch.

Whatever his future at club level may be, the Chelsea legend would surely like it to be resolved sooner rather than later. Whether that’s realistic given Barcelona’s current circumstances remains to be seen.
