Magnificent mugham music was played in Spain during the year of Shusha, reports Azernews, citing Azertac.

Co-organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Madrid and the Khan Shushinski Foundation, the event brought together members of the Spanish government, representatives of the diplomatic corps, cultural and artistic personalities.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Spain Ramiz Hasanov briefed the event participants on the large-scale state-led restoration and construction works in Shusha after its liberation.

He pointed out that 2022 has been declared the Year of Shusha in Azerbaijan by the corresponding presidential decree, considering the historical and cultural significance of the city.

Founded by Panahali Khan of Karabakh in 1752, the city of Shusha celebrates its 270th anniversary this year.

The Ambassador stressed that the city plays a major role in the cultural, public and political life of Azerbaijan.

Known as the capital of Azerbaijani culture and the cradle of national music, Shusha holds a special place in the formation of folk songs and mugham art.

The ambassador underlined the importance of Azerbaijani mugham to keep alive the national culture and traditions and to protect the purity of the Azerbaijani language.

Ramiz Hasanov drew attention to the fact that the art of mugham was included in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (2003) and in the Representative List of Cultural Heritage immaterial of humanity (2008).

The event was followed by a vibrant concert program where the Karabakh Mugham Ensemble under the leadership of People’s Artist Mansum Ibrahimov captivated the audience with Azerbaijani mugham and folk songs.

The set includes People’s Artist Elchin Hashimov (tar), Honored Artist Elnur Ahmadov (kamancha) and Honored Artist Kamran Karimov (naghara).

As part of the event, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Spain distributed brochures promoting mugham art and postage stamps with the image of the Azerbaijani flag and Shusha Castle.

Postage stamps were put into circulation by the Spanish Post and Telegraph Company.
